A new sculpture commemorating two of Baffins Pond's most recognisable residents has been installed by Portsmouth City Council, following a community-led project to honour Snowy, the distinctive white goose who became a familiar sight at the pond.
The Baffins goose sculpture project was developed in response to requests from residents and councillors for a lasting tribute to Snowy and their companion goose. Known affectionately by many local people as "The Odd Couple", the pair became a well-known feature of the pond and were remembered fondly by the community.
The completed sculpture depicts both geese and is accompanied by an interpretation panel highlighting the wider wildlife that can be found at Baffins Pond.
The project celebrates the important connection between local people and one of the city's most valued green spaces, recognising how wildlife can become a meaningful part of community life.
Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council, said:
"Snowy and their companion became a familiar part of Baffins Pond and are still remembered by many local residents who enjoyed seeing them during visits to the park.
"This sculpture is a response to a community idea and provides a permanent reminder of two birds that became part of the local area's story. It also helps draw attention to the wider wildlife at Baffins Pond and the importance of protecting and valuing our natural spaces."
The sculpture is now in place at Baffins Pond and forms a new feature for visitors to enjoy while learning more about the site's wildlife.
